Abstract: This paper presents a computer-independent programming technique for finite element groundwater problems, implemented on vector-computers. Instead of performing element by element computations, the data are rearranged in long and contiguous streams by a preprocessing algorithm. The conjugated gradients algorithm is used for solving the global equation system. Computational speed-ups of more than one order of magnitude are achieved.
