Abstract: The wave equation formulation of the shallow water equations is shown to suppress spurious spatial oscillations. inherent in finite element models using the primitive equations. Wave equation forms of both the momentum and continuity equations applied to an idealized harbor verifies that the single most important issue in obtaining noise-free simulations is to cast the continuity in wave form.
