Abstract: Radially spreading surface layers due to submerged releases of waste heat are analyzed. Available field and laboratory data suggest that the effect of the entrainment on the radial momentum balance is just compensated by a slope of the free surface, and that the surface dilution increases with the square root of the distance from the source.
