Abstract: Three probability functions (ex ponential, gamma and mixed exponential) with various degrees of com plexity are objectively compared to determine the most appropriate model for the distribution of hourly rainfall amounts. On the basis of the likelihood ratio test, it was found that the mixed exponential distribution described best the hourly rain fall distribution.
