Abstract: The hydraulic phenomena occuring at the confluence of a subcritical secondary channel dischar ging into a su percritical main one are studied experimentally for the case of a small junction angle. Quantitative criteria are established in terms of the critical and the undisturbed depths of the two channels, which govern the ap pearance of backwater effects on the tributary and the formation of a hydraulic jump in the main channel.
