Abstract: Experimental investigation on the rheological responses of soft mud to the action of sinusoidal water waves was carried out by using the shear-controlled oscillatory viscometer and pure commercial kaolinite. Through dynamic tests in the shear strain and frequency sweepings, the features of soft mud in terms of rheological parameters, waveform and Lissajous pattern were firstly examined. It showed that dynamic responses of soft mud can be classified into three stages: solid-liquid transition stage, liquid stage and liquid-yield stage. Then, the dynamic characteristics of soft mud in response to cyclic wave loads were examined by changing the water content ratio of mud samples and the strain amplitude and period of oscillatory shear forces. The results revealed that under oscillatory loads, soft mud is characterized by the combined viscoelastic-plastic properties, and the rheological behaviors of the soft mud are significantly influenced by the water content ratio and load magnitude.
