Abstract: A finite element based num erical m odel using complete discretization for the θ-based and the ψ-based form s of the equation for flow through unsaturated porous media is presented. It is verified by comparing with several known solutions. Model calibration is done using moisture and suction data collected in an artificial slope subjected to controlled rainfall from rain simulator. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is estimated using a method based on probab ility concepts. The calibrated model is applied to predict moisture and suction profiles under varying rainfall conditions in the artificial slope.
