Abstract: The Boundary Integral Equation Method (BIEM) is used to solve the equations of free surface groundwater flow along vertical slices intersecting one or more streams. This is externally coupled to a Muskingum-Cunge kinematic streamflow routing algorithm. The exchange of flow between stream and aquifer at a groundwater section causes changes in hydraulic heads within the cross-section and determines the lateral flow (or outflow) for flow routing in nearby reaches. A succession of groundwater sections perpendicular to a stream allows routing with exchange flow integrated along reaches. The model is relatively simple and has been run on a microcomputer. Results of two example problems are presented. It is concluded that the model is viable and will have most use where exchange flow is a significant proportion of the total streamflow.
