Abstract: The validity of using Darcy's law for the relationship between velocity and hydraulic gradient when modelling groundwater flow at low shear rates is questioned. Experimental evidence is presented which indicates that water containing dissolved air behaves as a thixotropic Non-Newtonian fluid at low shear rates. It is suggested that other dissolved substances could have a similar effect by enhancing the molecular structure of the water.
