Abstract: A method is described for predicting the tim e over which pumping should take place from shortscreened monitoring bores, to overcome the effects of casing storage water. Pumping time was found to depend principally on the borehole radius and the local transmissivity of the bore/aquifer system. The method has been evaluated in laboratory and field studies. Results approximated the predicted behaviour, except when casing storage water contained h igher concentrations of dissolved solids than groundwater. In the latter case, prolonge d pumping is required, and monitoring of electrical conductivity or other parameters in pump discharge is recommended to assess the effectiveness of pump ing in reducing casing storage effects.
