Abstract: A method is presented to obtain the transient temperature profile below a saltgradient solar pond when the temperature within its bottom storage zone is known as a function of time. The methodology is a generalization to the analytical solution of the one-dimension heat conduction e quation into a semiinfinite solid when its temperature is raised in a ste p fashion. The methodology is a pplicable to lined ponds over a completely dry or wet soil. The pa perd iscusses other non-conductive heat transfer mechanisms in relation to lined and unlined ponds that increase ground heat loss. Even for lar ge ponds, the heat loss to the earth can be significant and must be considered in site selection and modeling of pond performance.
