Abstract: A computer program for depth- averaged flow calculations ls being used for the calculation of flood levels and flow patterns in the Dutch main rivers. For the solution of the two- dimensional hydrodynamic equa tions use ls made of finite differences on a staggered grid, with equal grid sizes in both directions. Recently this computer program has been extended for calculations on orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The set of equations is presented, and a grid generator that enables the user to define the partial grid variation beforehand ls described. The grid generator is based on a variant of Thompson's method with attraction functions which have to be defined by the user through a preliminary sketch of the desired grid. The influence of grid size variation and orthogonality on the computational results are considered. An application for a section of the River Waal ls given.
