Abstract: Exper imental studies were performed to investigate the behaviour of buoyant and non-buoyant jet dischar ging into a cross-flowing ambient current in a trapezoidal channel. Concentration, temperature and induced velocity were measured in the near-field region which extended to about 24 pipe diameters downstream of the outfall. The results are presented in terms of jet trajectory, jet width, jet depth and minimum dilution. A modified shoreline attachment criterion for a trapezoidal channe1 is presented. The physical model was scaled to represent a typical large outfall into one of the connecting channels of the Great Lakes system.
