Abstract: Travel time and di spersion measurements were carried out at_ seven si tes between Yering & Dights Falls in the Yarra River under 10W flow conditions using a fluorescent dye. It was found that the residence time of dye was up to 4 times longer than estimated from vel ocity-flow rate rating curves. Di spersion coefficient-flow rate and velocity-flow rate relationships were apparent. Two disti nct riverine envi ronments exist in this segment of the Yarra river. The upstream section is a series of pools and riffles while the downstream section is a long shallow run of the river reservoir due to the presence of a weir at Dights Falls. Dispersion, velocity and water quality variations appear to be distinctly different for the two sections.
