Abstract: This paper deals with the Lagrangian characteristics of longi tudinal mixing in the free surface shear flow. Theoretical consideration of the study is made in view of the classical turbulent diffusion theory of Taylor in a uniform turbulent flow. Because of many difficulties of laboratory practices in Lagrangian measurements, a Lagrangian numerical simulation model using random number series has been developed to obtain the Lagrangian velocity and the displacement of a particle. The study interest directs to the hydraulic characteristics of an auto-correlation function with detailed examinations. Mathematical representations of the auto-correlation function, the integral time scale, and the dispersion coefficient are also made with comparative studies with exper imental data obtained.
