Abstract: A standard di ffusion equation is presented to model the turbulent dispersion of positively and negatively buoyant particles in two-dimensional open channel flow. The governing equation is reduced to an eigen- value problem by the separation of variables and the eigenf unctions and eigenvalues are evaluated for a power law velocity profile (this is a very good approximation to the logarithmic velocity profile) and a parabolic di ffusivity distribution. A power series solution to the ordinary differential equation is employed and found to be efficient and accurate. The solution is shown to be applicable to the problems. of sedimentation engineering and the design of spillway aerators. Exper. imental results previously obtained by two other researchers are compared to the theoretical solution showing fair agreement in the majority of cases.
