Abstract: The overall circulation patterns and the degree of mixing within a service reservoir were examined for a variety of inlet/outlet configurations using a hydraulic model. The model was designed so that both distorted and undistorted scale modelling could be underta ken depending on the type of inlet under investigation. The age distri bution function or outlet concentration curve was used to characterise the type of mixing within the reservoir for each inlet/outlet configuration. The results show the significant effect inlet type and location can have on the ci rculation/mixing characteristics within a reservoir. The suitability of each inlet type in promoting desirable mixing characteristics is assessed and recommendations are made for improving circulation/mixing within the existing service reservoir.
