Abstract: A model is presented for the calculation of the local vertical diffusion coefficient ε (z) in stratified flows dominated by bottom shear. The universal coefficients are determined from laboratory experiments on vertical mixing in open-channel flow. Application of the method using a numerical lD diffu- sion model shows good agreement of the calculated density profiles with profiles measured in laboratory and field situations. The model can be appllied for computations on the vertical mixing of cooling water and waste water disposals after the initial dilution phase.
