Abstract: Experimental work was carried out in a laboratory model consisting of main-channel and flood-plain, covering different ranges of hydraulic features using rigid and flexible roughnesses on the flood-plain o simulate hedges and trees. It has been demonstrated that predicting stage-di scharge relationships in compound channels with flood- plain heavily vegetated by hedges and trees is far from being achieved, as roughness coeff icient varies widely with depth causing a considerable variation in discharge estimated using constant roughness coefficient with depth. The present study concludes that the horizontal division line in smooth channels has a wider range of application for predicting stage-discharge relationships whereas in vegetated channels no such divided channel approach is applicable.
