Abstract: The work described is an exper imental and theoretical investigation into flow characteristics in channels with compiex cross -sections. To achieve better agreement with results for natural rivers, in this study special regard was given to the problem of highly. -vegetated flood plains. Two cross-sections with varying aspect ratios and flood-plain roughnesses were investigated. The necessary measurements were carried out by applying LDV and Preston-tube techniques. In a theoretical approach a depth-averaged ver-sion of the k-c model was used. The numerical results of this model were found to be considerably depen-dent on the non-dimensional diffusivity. In the absence of exper imental evidence, this quantity was. evaluated by a calibration procedure leading to a good prediction of the depth-averaged velocities and the bed shear stresses in the channel under consideration. The water depth, which was imposed on the calcula- tions of the two. -dimensional model, resulted from a one-dimensional model, which due to its originality is also briefly outlined.
