Abstract: One of the most important factors in mathematical modelling of complex flood plains 18 the abllity to effectively simulate the transfer of water between channel and flood plaln. Control of this transfer within the model has usually been performed by welr -type equa tlons. To overcome shortcomings in this approach a cell-type unsteady flow model, CELI2D, has been developed to simulate trangfer by frlctlonal resls tance. The model has been tes ted and vallda ted. Brief des crl ptlons of these applications of the model are given. Conclusions are drawn regarding ease of callbration, accuracy and topographic data requlrements.
