Abstract: SYNOPSIS A major flood which occurred in the Bumbu River in September 1983, has drawn attention to the fragility of the peaceful co-existence of the river and Lae City. Due to human activities in the catchment, the river now carries a very heavy sediment load which has led to widening, straightening, and braiding of the channel, resulting in considerable damage to property. Even more ser ious is the danger of the river reverting to a former alignment passing through the industrial zone of Lae. It is essential that a data base of rainfall and flood flows be established in order that a comprehensive river training scheme can be desi gned. This paper descri bes important features of the catchment, outlines the investigations that are being carried out, and describes the methodology of establishing a data base. The research is continuing but progress results and recommendations are given.
