Abstract: The significance of lateral flow exchange and interfacial shear between the main channel and floodplains on backwater computation. is investigated using a quasi-one-dimensional backwater computation method for gradually varying steady flow in compound channels. It has been found that as far as the water surface profile is concerned, the effect of the lateral discharge ls significant whereas the effect of the interfacial shear is relatively less important. These effects diminish as the ratio of the flow depths in the floodplain and main channel increases. Also, conventional approach of applying the standard step back- water method to a composite single channel is found less accurate.
