Abstract: The diffusion method of flood routing in rivers with floodplains is investigated. A solution to the di ffusion equation expressed in terms of error- functions is given. The nature of the di ffus ion coefficient is examined in details. Convective and local subs i dence parameters, incorporating the di ffusion coeffi cient, channel -floodplain geometries and flow characteristics, have been derived in terms of a power function of distance travelled by the flood wave, and their coefficients and powers have been evaluated using results of numerical experiments obtained previously. Testing with limited field data carried out for peak subsidence shows that the method proposed is reasonably accurate. .
