Abstract: In tropical and subtropical watercourses Ni kuradses equivalent sand roughness may reach the same magnitude as the flow depth. In some cases observed roughnesses may even exceed this depth. This is Caused by the bottom vegetation that, due to its flexibility, represents a hi gher roughness than its physical size may justify. The hydraulic_ problems associated with such high roughnesses are discussed and a modified logarithmic velocity profile is developed and experimentally verified for use in such watercourses. Also a Manning- type power formula is developed to replace the Manning formula in flows where the modified profile applies.
