Abstract: The resistance to flow of floodplains with grasses and hedges 1s discussed. Results of field measurements of the hydraulic resistance of grasslands are presented in the first part and based on these results a charac- teristic roughness length of 0.2 m has been accepted for the floodplains of the River Rhine in the Ne ther- lands. In the second part a method ls proposed for predicting the hydraulic roughness of hedges which are completely drowned, as an extension of the work by Klaassen and van der Zwaard (1974) which covered hedges not completely drowned. The method proposed 1s verified by some flume experiments.
