Abstract: The effect of lateral momentum transfer on the discharge distribution in composite cross-sections and on flow dept h is discussed, ma king use of results of recent experiments. A model is presented which describes the redistribution of water by the river flood plain interac tion; its application on the branches of the Rhine to quan tify the effect of momentum transfer on the discharge rating curve is dealt with. The results were used to calibrate the effective viscosity coefficient of a two-dimensional depth-averaged flow model. The viscosity coefficient obtained in this w ay agrees well with estimate s of the viscosity by empirical formulae.
