Abstract: A well known variation of Manning's roughness coefficient with flow depth in circular channels is used to determine reach lengths computed by numer ical integration of the equation of gradually varied flow. These reach lengths are compared with ones computed using a constant roughness coefficient, given equi valent conditi ons otherwise. A variety of problems involving mild and steep water surface profiles was devised for the compar isons. Results show a si gnificant effect in using the variable roughness coefficient, although no discernible pattern in predicting the effect was evident.
