Abstract: Slug dye releases were made into a river over a range of discharges varying from low flow to extensive floodplain inundation. It was found that despite nore than order of magnitude var iations in discharges and river width, the longitudinal dispersion coefficients and system velocity varied slowly. The rate of transverse mixing across the floodplain is much greater than can be accounted for by turbulent diffusion alone and is probably dominated by advection. A sinple lianning equation model reasonably pre- dicted the velocity and discharge varlatlons.
