Abstract: The rainfall-runoff phenomenon subject to t ime-dependent excess rainfall is modelled using the ki- nematic wave theory. In particular, the combined effect of flow characteristics over a plane catchment area and the small stream situated at its downstream portion are considered as a system of two cascades. Appro- priate transformation of the net inflow in the latter allows approximate determination of the governing hy- drograph at the outlet of the basin in question. The effects of the hydraulic and geometrical properties of the basin are thereby accounted for. The proposed method enables a rapid and simple prediction of all per- tinent hydrograph quantities, once the excess hyetograph is specified.
