Abstract: The paper deals with the development and application of a twodimensional statisti- cal method by which flood frequency is analysed, regarding flood peaks as well as flood volumes. All flood events are shown as points on a coordinate scale. Suppo- sing that the time series of the two characteristics are two collectives, which are independent from each other, coordinates of equivalent probability are de- termined and shown on the coordinate scale. Now for every defined probability flood peak and flood volume can be selected as pair of values of the relevant de- sign flood. Finally, hydrographs of design events are determined by means of nor- malized standard hydrographs. By this empirical method it is possible to select a design flood event, by regarding the determined hydrological risk, with suf ficient applicable approximation according to a special problem in water resources plan- ning.
