Abstract: A mathematical model for prediction of sediment transport in open channels is presented. It considers sediment transported both as bed-load and in suspension. The bed-load is simulated as a densely packed layer moving near the bottom and is described by an Exner type continuity equation along with the constitutive laws for stress and strain of sediment- -water mixtures. The suspended sediment is simulated by a convec tion-dispersion equation in which the proper relations for the rates of erosion and/or deposition are included. The two modes of sediment transport are solved separately. However, thelr mutual interaction is taken into account. Emphasis is placed on the derivation of analytical expressions.
