Abstract: Within the framework of the Dutch Delta Plan various discharge sluices have been built serving as a tool for the water management in this area. The design of these structures was mostly supported by small-scale model investigations. Prototype measurements are of great value for verification of model results and the design assumptions. This paper describes, as an example, the results of the prototype measurements for two types of discharge sluices. The me asurements on the submerged culvert type sluice concern discharge char- acteristics determined by fluorescent tracers, by propellers and by an acoust- ical method, dynamic forces on gates and scour development downstream of the bottom protec tion. The measurements on the siphon type sluice concern discharge characteristics (acoustical method), air and water pressure inside the siphon and pr iming and depr iming characteristics. Wherever possible a comparison is presented between prototype and model results.
