Abstract: Dimensi onless presentations of wave diffraction through a narrow breakwater gap have been computed from the analytical solution of Morse and Rubens tein. Particular attention was given to the Mathieu and modified Mathieu functions, in terms of which this solution 18 presented, to narrow gaps, typical of smaller harbors, and to the wave field near the gap, where available details are most sparse. RESUME. Une pr esentation a- dimensionelle de la refraction a travers une fente etrolte dans un bri se- lames est obtenue a partir de la solution analytique de Morse et Rubenstein. Cette solution est decrite a l'aide. des fonctions de Mathieu et des. fonctions de Mathieu modifiees, que l'on detaille. On apporte une attention particullere aux fentes etroites, caracteristiques des ports de petites dimensions, et aux vagues pres de la fente, pour lesquelles les connaissances sont les plus tenues.
