Abstract: A new two-component electromagnetic flow meter was used for measurements of centrifugally induced secondary currents in a bend of an alluvial laboratory channel. The built-in accuracy of the meter combined with a careful probe-alignment procedure made it possible to measure spatial peculiarities in the secondary-flow profile with adequate accuracy. The response time of the meter is 50 seconds, which is but a small fraction of the time scale of most dune-induced variations in the flow velocity.
