Abstract: The contouring of hydraulic models is a long and costly operation, mainly due to the repetitive and ar-tisanal nature of the work. The aim of the present paper, therefore, is to propose a method and to de-scribe an instrument enabling to measure in real-time the shape of any structure. The instrument, based on projection moire principle, provides a fringe modulated object picture in the image plane of the obser-vation system. These superposed fringes represent the contour lines of the examined object. The instrument is described in all its aspects: formation, recording and interpretation of the contour fringes. The pos-sibility of inter-changeable sensitivity incorporated in the instrument, permits its use in the measurement of the topography of the bed of a water-way as well as in the measurements pertaining to successive phases of erosion. The surface covered by the system is approximately 20 m2 for any position chosen by the oper-ator in order to monitor the topography in real-time on the TV screen or to record it for further analysis by digital image-processing.
