Abstract: This paper describes the results of an experimental study on the drag coeffi-cient of a deeply submerged sharp edged weir placed on a fully rough boundary in open channel flow. The roughness pattern is described in detail and is fitted into a concept of more universal application. The drag force coefficient is considered analytically and theoretically. Experimental data were collected to investigate the effects of water depth, roughness pattern and Froude-number on the drag coefficent. Data collected by other investigators in water channels and wind tunnels of various dimensions have also been used to compare the data of the present work with those collected with smooth boundaries in water flow on the one hand and with those collected over smooth and rough boundaries in wind tunnels on the other hand. A first approach has been made to give a calculable relation for the drag coefficient of a weir in an open channel based on parameter of the undisturbed uniform flow.
