Abstract: The equivalen t rou ghness coefficient of a compound channel is in vestigated in the present study based on the hydraulic model experiments. The equivalent roughness coefficient changes depending on the water level due to the in teraction between flows on a flood plain and in a main channel. The Ida method is used for the calculation of the equivalent roughness coefficient and the hydraulic model is produced very similar to n atural rivers. The overall and local mixing coefficien ts are introduced to characterize the change of the equiv alent roughness coefficient, which is also related to the change of turbulence properties.
