Abstract: The first two papers discussed(by Phillips andChapman, respectively)provide an interestingcontrast in the interpretation of observationsof the travel time of dye through a body ofwater.Phillips examines circulation patternsin a water supply service reservoir, and isparticularly concerned about short circuiting ofthe flow,so that a dye pulse released at theinlet reaches the outlet(after some mixing)more rapidly than indicated by the theoreticalhydraulic residence time.Chapman,on the otherhand, examines the travel time of a pulse of dyereleased in a river, and is concerned that theresidence time of dye was up to four times thatestimated from velocity flow rating curves.
