Abstract: Considering problems like energy dissipation, cavitation and atomization caused by high-speed flows, ski-jump-step energy dissipater is proposed to provide sufficient aerated flow for the stepped chute downstream through pre-aeration in the ski jump and aeration basin with large unit discharges, therefore extends the applicability of traditional stepped chutes in terms of discharge limitations. In order to optimize the flow pattern in the ski jump of the ski-jump-step energy dissipater for structure design and safety consideration, 3 cases with different geometries were designed and the classification of flow regime as well as the hydraulic characteristics in this section was experimentally investigated. It is concluded that the flow pattern in the ski jump can be significantly improved by the arrangement of ventilation shaft as well as the lengthening of flat bottom tunnel.
