Modelling the Impact of Estuarine and Coastal Morphological Changes on Tidal Dynamics in the German Bight

Abstract: Morphology in shallow coastal zones significantly characterises the local tidal regime. Changes of the shape of the coastal relief and bathymetry thus also effect the tidal dynamics in that region. The investigation aims at how far man-made morphological effects spread into adjacent regions and how they interact with natural morphological developments. This is addressed using numerical simulations of different morphological settings in a cross-scale hydrodynamic model. By isolating different morphological changes from other global or local effects, their specific contribution to local tide gauge observations along the German Bight is investigated. The paper exemplarily shows first results for the Weser estuary.
