Abstract:

Each power intake and outlet structure in a pumped storage hydroelectric system requires a unique, site-specific design shaped by hydraulic, structural, and environmental factors. These structures facilitate the controlled water transfer between the upper and lower reservoirs through the electromechanical equipment, ensuring minimal energy loss while preventing cavitation, vibration, air and particles entrainment and other operational inefficiencies. The bi-directional flow conditions in pumped storage systems add complexity to the design, requiring careful consideration of flow stability, debris management, and hydraulic efficiency. This article explores key design challenges and optimization strategies to improve the performance, resilience, and longevity of these structures, based on lessons learned from recent projects.
