Abstract: Non-linear weirs are hydraulic structures that significantly increase discharge capacity due to their folded geometry compared to conventional linear weirs. The design of Labyrinth Weirs was first presented in 1940. In the early 21st century, the need for a smaller footprint led to the development of a more advanced geometry – the Piano Key Weir. Since then, extensive research has been conducted to enhance the understanding and performance of these structures, resulting in a large amount of publications on the topic of Piano Key Weirs. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of research on Piano Key Weirs through an intensive literature review. It categorizes past studies based on publication type and year, research methods, and investigated topics. Additionally, a content analysis highlights key research areas and significant findings. Finally, research deficits and future research challenges are identified.
