Abstract: One of the measures to prevent excessive flooding is a Kutsuwa Domo, in which part of the river is significantly widened and an overflow embankment is constructed. Hydraulic model tests were carried out on this embankment and it was confirmed that it created a horizontal recirculating flow and prevented sediment from entering the area within an embankment. However, due to the limited number of measurement points, it was not possible to resolve the detailed flow conditions in the passage. In this study, numerical calculations were therefore carried out to reproduce the model experiment at the water level. The results were used to examine the hydraulic characteristics of the Kutsuwa Domo, suggesting that the upstream and downstream water levels are lowered by the overflow from the embankment, and that the wide flood plain of the Kutsuwa Domo has the function of depositing gravels which adversely affect the agricultural land in the embankment area.
