Abstract: One of the flood control measures in urban rivers is the use of lateral overflow weirs to store flood waters in regulating reservoirs or detention basins. Therefore, there are so many studies on the lateral overflow. However, many studies on the lateral overflow are related to the lateral overflow discharge, so this study focuses on the lateral overflow angle. The overflow angle at the upstream edge of the weir is θ1 and that at downstream edge of weir is θ2. It is found in this study that the overflow angles θ1 are almost independent of Froud number and the inflow discharge and its value is 36 degrees, The overflow angle θ2 increases as Froud number increases and depends on the inflow discharge strongly, in the sub-critical flow. On the other hand, for the super-critical flow the dependence of the inflow discharge becomes small. The formulation to estimate overflow angle is developed. The results estimated with the formulation are in good agreement with the experimental results.
