Abstract: Mean flow and turbulence in the vicinity of a submerged spur dike attached to an inclined bank in a long flatbed open channel is investigated with both experimental and numerical methods. The 3D-flow velocities are measured in details using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). Different RANS simulations are used to simulate the complex local flow field around the submerged spur dike and eddy viscosity model is used to model the turbulence. Numerical simulations are carried out using the open-source tool OpenFOAM-v2012, and validated with experimental data. It is found that simulated flow velocity from the k-ω SST RANS turbulence model is reasonably in agreement with those of the experimental measurements. From the results high flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy can be observed on both flatbed and inclined bank in the downstream direction of the spur dike.
