Abstract: Large typhoons and localized heavy rains frequently caused breaches in river levees. Predicting overtopping erosion of the levees is crucial for mitigating damage to the floodplain area. This study employs a shallow–water flow model and a two–dimensional vertical flow model with seepage flow to investigate the impact of different flow models on the prediction of overtopping erosion. The results indicate minimal differences in topographic changes caused by model variations for small embankments, affirming the adequacy of the shallow–water flow model for such analyses.
