Abstract: After impoundation of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, water and sediment conditions in the lower Yellow River changed greatly, leading to river evolution. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the long - term channel evolution in different lower - reach sections. This study analyzed the evolution of the main channel at typical downstream sections using cross - section data from 2000 to 2022. The results show that downstream sections have different characteristics, with more upstream degradation and less downstream degradation. For the wandering reach upstream of Gaocun, the main channel is becoming narrower and deeper. During the flood season, the main channel swing in the wandering reach is large but has decreased since 2013. The bankfull flow continues to grow stably. The longitudinal stability of the riverbed increases as the bed sediment coarsens significantly. The lateral stability of the wandering section changes little, while that of the transition and meandering sections increases. These findings are crucial for supporting the management of the lower Yellow River and the rational utilization of water resources, providing a scientific basis for related decision - making and river regulation.
