Abstract: This study uses numerical simulations to investigate the flow around partially submerged farm animals exposed to floodwaters; in particular the case of a domestic pig is here reported. The simulations allow to calculate the forces acting on the animals' body, which are then used to estimate drag and lift coefficients. These are fundamental data for developing instability models based on force balances, which allow to estimate flood vulnerability of farm animals as a function of water depth and velocity. This is crucial not only for safeguarding animals exposed to floodwaters but also for assessing flood damage to livestock.
