Abstract: Dike breaching mechanism and process is very important for flood defense. There are few studies considered the breaching of dike with top structures, such as concrete road and temporal dike. Experiments are conducted for dike breaching with top structures in present work. Results show that for both cases with concrete road and temporal dike on the top, there were two cascades formed during the backward erosion stage, while the erosion process was obviously delayed. The road break piece by piece as the soil under the road was erode away. The temporal dike failed because the bags comprising the dike was flushed away or lose its stability due to the underpin soil erode away.
